Human Nature has everything I look for in a personal care product. I first heard about this product from my former boss. She is a fan of the product more because of its advocacy and because she knows her skin is taken care of. I find myself in the same situation now. 

Let me give you a short story of how Human Nature.

Gandang Kalikasan, Inc. was the brainchild of Gawad Kalinga volunteers Anna Meloto-Wilk, Dylan Wilk and Camille Meloto who burned with the desire to help uplift the Philippines and the Filipino people from poverty.

Anna's passion for the environment blossomed with her first child. Together with Dylan her husband, the successful British entrepreneur who gave up his fast cars and wealthy lifestyle in England to work for the poor in the Philippines, they decided to use cloth diapers after reading that disposable diapers contain toxic chemicals and take 500 years to deteriorate! Living a more sustainable and "green" lifestyle eventually led them to using fewer chemicals and, well, less stuff in general.

Anna and Dylan lived in the United States for a year while Dylan set up a network of Gawad Kalinga volunteers. During their stay, Anna noticed a growing trend of affordable, natural and ethically-acquired products entering the mainstream market. LOVE in 100 Shoe Boxes

Last July, we asked our friends to put all the love they can give, for a child, inside a shoe box. We coordinated with a partner organization who gave us a list of underprivileged 100 kids from the slums of Baseco, Tondo. This isn't our first time to meet the kids but the experience is brand new. The response to the project is overwhelming.

We interviewed the volunteers who joined us in the field and here's what they have to say:

I have done this many times. But the difference each experience brings to my life never fails to amaze me. This is the second time Project Tenfold went to Baseco, Tondo. This is extra special because we didn’t just bring food or supplies as we did last time. We brought 100 boxes from 100 different people who made each box special by spending time thinking of the kid’s needs, happiness and amazement. It was a task dedicated to sharing a piece of oneself to a total stranger in need where we all spent more time in making it meaningful rather than just beautiful. There were 9 of us on field work, but it did feel like there are 100 people more with us.

The streets in Baseco are shallow. It was hard to maneuver our cars to the location. Every resident who got a chance to check us out did; just imagine the amount of attention we got. What are they here for? Who are they? It felt like we were invading a very private property and any wrong move will get us into trouble. But the after-event was entirely different; we were smiled to, held tight, hugged even, and waved at, on our way home.

Poverty can take away one’s hope, trust in humanity and even one’s faith in fellowmen. But LOVE can always bring it back. LOVE, no matter what shape, size or form, heals all.

This has been the second time I've been to Baseco for a Project Tenfold project, and the experience brought back memories of hope and gratitude when we were there the first time.

You can't beat the joy you feel when you see happy smiling faces the moment the children see you arrive to when they get to eat and receive their "shoebox presents". That experience changes you. It brings you a different perspective, and you begin to realize how trivial the many things you complain or stress about everyday. You worry so much about your wardrobe or "OOTD" when this child was all smiles getting a new pair of underwear! You obsess about taking pictures of your food but not even finishing it, when this kid doesn't even touch his because he wants to give it to his mom since they don't have dinner.

Simply put, it was bittersweet. It made me realize what I have to be thankful for everyday and how much more I can give even though how little.

Perhaps majority of us will agree that Tondo is definitely an opposite of what a paradise is.

So I got a little skeptic when I was asked to join Project Tenfold’s Love in 100 Shoeboxes. But I thought this may be a chance of a lifetime so I gave it a go.

When we got there, I was thrilled to see how excited and happy the kids were for the event. Their happiness and excitement even amplified when they got their chicken meal and their own shoe boxes. It was mind-opening. I never thought how lucky I am until I saw their faces. I can’t explain how proud I was to be part of it - to hear their delight after opening their shoe boxes. Realization – I should be thankful for what I have for these kids barely have something.

I wouldn’t say it was fun – it is enlightening. It feels good when you know how happy others are because of what you did.

I couldn't be happier knowing that I was able to see that, even in a place like Tondo, paradise does exist.

Poverty has been a consistent problem throughout the history. No matter what the median income, unemployment or overall prosperity level is, there will be people who are homeless and hungry. Today, there are lots of people who are struggling to find better shelter, feed their kids and find warm clothing. I maybe one of them, well, not quite. Not until I joined Project Tenfold Circle by accident (or probably not), that I was able to see the difference.

It was quite an adventure going there in Baseco but at the same time the most fulfilling and wonderful thing that ever happened in my life. I will definitely miss the kids.

It is an honor to be part of The Project Tenfold Circle. The experiences I have shared with them were very fulfilling. This is my second time to join an event. And I am very proud to say that in this project (LOVE in 100 Shoe Boxes), I really devoted time in helping make it successful… and it was!

I can clearly recall the excitement of the kids when we arrived at the site. It was already an appetizer to the main course. Words can’t express how happy I was after seeing the kids flabbergasted to see what’s inside the shoe boxes.

In our lives, we tend to take things for granted. There are things we think are useless, but to some, these are the exact same things they have been praying for – a new pair of shoes, a new shirt, chocolates, a pencil case, etc.

If there’s one thing I learned from my Baseco experience, it’s this:

You don’t need to be rich or famous or generous to a fault to make a difference in someone’s life.

Sometimes, you just have to be an instrument. Sometimes, your mere presence is enough. Not everyone can be there. So, I think it’s always a privilege to be physically present in order to help people help other people.

There are many different ways, and many different forms of helping people. Everyone involved in this project has helped those kids in Baseco. We served them boxes brimming with love, hope and a reminder that they are not forgotten. And in return, I believe those kids helped all of us.

I am struggling to find the words to describe my Baseco experience, but I know it breaks my heart. Maybe because I have not seen so much joy in having a decent meal and so much gratitude from receiving humble gifts except from those 100 kids. It made me think, “When was the last time I was hungry and was more than grateful that I had enough food on my plate?” or “Have I ever received a gift and not desired for something greater?” It probably pained me to see that some would go to the extent of depriving themselves to have something to take home to their families. “How could these little ones understand sacrifice so well, when all I could think of was myself at that age?”

Believe or not, I learned more from the kids more than they have probably learned from me. There are certain things in life that we take for granted and it feels good to have something to keep you grounded. Most think that I would say I walked away from the experience “full” however I became “hungry”. This is the kind that fuels the desire to be more and do more!

When I got the chance to read the news about the latest project (Love in 100 Shoe boxes) from the team, my first reaction was to smile and be glad about this opportunity to again help others and make a difference. I dearly hoped to see those adorable kids again two years back.

So we gave out the boxes and food and made 100 of these children and their parents happy. Was it fulfilling? No doubt that it was. But was it enough? Definitely not. It will never be, as long as you see hands waving, not to say "hi" but to reach out and ask for something ... or anything we could give as alms. We can only do as much and that, makes a huge difference. Even as the program went on, there were children outside with faces gleaming with hope of getting lucky. Whatever they were feeling or thinking at that time gave me an impression that this would not be the last time I'd see this place.

I will live on to see more happy faces. I can't wait until the next project!

The Project Tenfold Circle’s LOVE in 100 Shoe Boxes is one of the most unforgettable experiences I ever had. It was my first time to step in Tondo, Manila .  I was so happy that I will be able to share my blessings to the needy ones.

As I give the gifts and food that we prepared for the kids I can really see the smile on their faces - a smile that touched my heart and made me happy. By participating on this kind of activity, I become a blessing to others.

I will never regret that I chose to spend my weekend with these kids and I thank my Project Tenfold Familia for letting me experience this precious moment with the Baseco kids.

Furry Birthday 6

Hi Friends,

Since 2008, I have been spending my birthdays for the animals in many different ways. From collecting dog/cat food, to collecting coins to sponsor spaying/neutering of strays, to other gimmicks!

This year, my plan is to feed the shelter animals of the Philippine Welfare Society. As of August 1st, PAWS is taking care of 256 cats and 74 dogs. I have to raise funds in order to prepare the following:

1. Twelve (12) kilos of boiled "sawdust" or ground pork

2. 1-2 kilos cooked rice

3. Twelve (12) kilos of boiled galunggong

4. One (1) huge "kalabasa" or pumpkin

5. Six (6) kilos of cooked rice

6. Two (2) large plastic basin

7. Two (2) or more long-handled ladle for mixing

8. Disposable plastic gloves for deboning the fish

9. Old newspapers to line the table

10. One (1) XL garbage bag

11. Detergent 

12. Dishwashing soap and sponges

In 2009, I started collecting 5 and 10 cents from friends and deposited it in PAWS's bank account to pay for spaying/neutering of feral cats I see from around my area. I called my mini-project, MESSAGE CENT.

I like this project a lot as it sends the message that it does not always have to be a big amount of money; that one does not have to rich in order to help; that even our pocket change can go a long way.

This year, I'd like to use my birthday again as an excuse to appeal for your help. I will not ask for a big amount of money but for your spare coins and pocket change. I will be giving away empty water bottles that you can fill with Php 0.05, Php 0.10, Php 0.25, or any amount that your pocket can share.

I will collect the bottles back September 30, 2013.You have two months to fill the bottle. My birthday is on October 4 and I target to feed on October 5, if PAWS can accommodate the date. I will update you of the final details once ready.

October 4 is also World Animal Day celebration and the feast of St. Francis de Assis, the Catholics' patron saint for animals. 

Please let me know if you want to sign up so I hand over the bottle to you. You can also recycle and reuse any empty water bottle and surrender once filled or on September 30th, whatever comes first. 

You have no idea how far your participation can go.

Pray With Us

In almost all occasions, I would send a text message to officers and volunteers of The Project Tenfold Circle. We update ourselves of anything and everything through a text brigade. 

Today, as we brave the heavy rains over Luzon, I found myself not knowing how exactly to message our volunteers as I am also thinking about the safety of my family. It was particularly harder when the night struck as we don't know what can happen while it is dark. But I know there is no only One to go to for all these. 

Instead of an update, I sent this prayer to all. Please pray with us by uttering your own prayers. More than anything and anyone else, He will get us through. 

OUR PRAYER: 

Father, we honor You even in the midst of a raging storm. You are powerful than anyone of us can imagine. You can wipe us out or anything on earth with just one word, that's how powerful You are. But You are also a merciful God. You have already saved an entire tribe because of the prayer of Your few people, that's how much You value Your people. We pray for the safety of our families, our pets, our friends and their families, our country, and ourselves. Keep us in Your merciful hands in times like these. Strengthen our faith as we look up to You and no one else. Most of all, give us Your peace and comfort that transcend all human understanding. 

We thank You because You have been keeping us and the people we hold dear, safe. Give us the courage to go through this so we can rise above it and help those in need of our help and Your help. All these we ask, in Your name...

Letters to The Circle: They will wait for us.

Dear Project Tenfold Circle,

When Monday shift ended, I was exhausted. Work has been crazy lately but I am happy. A friend told me busy means job security. His advice helps me get through tough times at work. I couldn’t wait to hit the sack but remembered I had to scan some documents to be sent to Paypal, post the school supplies we still need for the I Saved a Meal for the Aeta project, coordinate with the liaison officer for our government documents among other things. Just the thought of all the things I needed to do made me more tired so I fell asleep.

When I woke up, I checked my mail. I have been in constant communication with Ptr. Wilson Ladrigan, Senior Pastor of the Aeta community we are about to visit. We have been ironing out the plans for the big day. There was one line from his email that touched my heart. He said, “We are praying for your visit here on June 9.”

It humbled my heart. I don’t live a grandiose life and there are things that I want to have but don’t get to. However, I have everything I need – a house, a family, good friends, a stable career, food and shelter. What we promised these Aeta kids when we first visited was to bring them a bag of a few school supplies. It was just a simple gift compared to what the shelter really needs but it means everything to them.

From my email conversations with Ptr. Wilson, I felt the gratitude, humility, anticipation, excitement, and most of all, the hope and faith that our project will come to pass. I have told him many times that, like them, we only rely on faith - faith that God will provide, faith that  He will touch the hearts of people to help. We really have nothing much to give. From then on, he has never stopped telling me how he has been praying for and with us.

I know that the anticipation, excitement and hope doesn’t just come from Ptr. Wilson. I (and some of you) have been there and have seen how adorable and grateful the kids are. I know that as they enjoy the company of their families in the mountains for vacation, they will never forget our promise. They will wait for us.

I know doing good can be tiring sometimes. It eats up the time that we’re supposed to be spending for ourselves.  It also, at times, empties our wallets. It is a decision to make every day. No one is forced to participate and we merely rely on each other’s generosity – generosity to share time, money and effort. It can be tiring sometimes. I get tired, too, but the thought of how faithful God has been in my life humbles me and gets me through. I hope it does the same to you.

Let us not get tired. Let’s not give up! Let us always keep in mind, every time we get tired of doing this, that an Aeta kid, along with his family, is waiting for us to arrive on June 9 with a bag of school supplies - a bag that contains his dreams and his hopes that he will make it in the future. Every time we get tired, let’s not forget that we are doing this for the One who has given us the grace to do this.  

Let us not become weary of doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. – Galatians 6:9

Finally there’s time to meet Haydee – the Head of the Water Patrol Unit of Greenpeace Philippines. Project Tenfold Circle is working on a joint project with Greenpeace Philippines and other organizations geared towards taking care of the environment. We have been planning on meeting for a long time and have not been able to due to the very busy schedules of everyone involved.

Today, we decided to meet over coffee before my shift and sort of stole two hours of our sleep time. We went to Bean Perk and ordered the following:

The meeting went well. It was a bit quick but with a lot of good things and hopes.

Encouraging people to get involved in environmental projects is one of the most difficult things to do for any organizations such as Greenpeace. I think it’s even more difficult than getting people involved in animal welfare. I don’t lose hope. Filipinos aren't really as involved as we are now in animal welfare as before. This gives me the same hope for our environmental causes.

We can play dumb and not care to know any of these things that affect our environment but I believe we can shift our gears and choose to get involved. Unless we, or a family member, become a victim of water toxin, I don't think we will care enough. Sure, the return of our investment doesn’t show as fast as we want it to be, but it does. Some people think these kind of causes (environment, animals, people) are only for those with money and time. I find that hard to believe. We can make money and time if we want to. It isn't about how much money we spend or how long we should work on it, it’s just a matter of CHOICE – something that we do every single second of our lives anyway.

Our project with Greenpeace requires time and a lot of planning. While Haydee was explaining how the project is going to be, my mind was already counting the obstacles my group has to go through to make it real. However, every time I look at Naya (Haydee’s 3-year old daughter who was with us sharing her own stories in between our project talk) my hope becomes brighter than the obstacles. When she gets older, I hope she remembers this moment when her Mom and I cared to talk about what most people would just ignore. Mind you, we didn’t have to preach; we just had to show her.

Last Friday, January 6th, I must have interrupted a very busy Friday for all the Tenfold Leaders by sending this overwhelming message to their emails. Friday to us, at work, is the new Monday. I was on leave so I do have all the time in the world. Here’s the email:

Dear Tenfold Leaders,

Yeah, this is long! So, do not read it yet if you do not have the time. :) I have been waiting for the right time to share this and I think that time is TODAY.

Months ago, I had a dream. I have briefly mentioned this to a friend.  As you can remember, my bed is located beside my only window. I keep the window open especially at night because I like the light the street post gives at night when all my lights are turned off (also saves energy, ha!). I can't remember what the activities were that day but I knew it was a tiring day so I fell asleep really fast and left my friend reading. I had a dream about someone (I can't figure out who it was.) who told me to wake up and get my Bible and read about what the Lord wants for Project Tenfold. In a snap, I found myself awake. Trying to figure out if I was indeed already awake, I looked at my friend who was sleeping like a baby. Remembering my dream, I immediately reached out for my Bible placed under my bed and opened it. With the light from the street post outside, I read these verses:

Isaiah 61

The Year of the LORD’s Favor

1 The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, 

   because the LORD has anointed me 

   to proclaim good news to the poor. 

He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, 

   to proclaim freedom for the captives 

   and release from darkness for the prisoners,

2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor 

   and the day of vengeance of our God, 

to comfort all who mourn, 

 3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion— 

to bestow on them a crown of beauty 

   instead of ashes, 

the oil of joy 

   instead of mourning, 

and a garment of praise 

   instead of a spirit of despair. 

They will be called oaks of righteousness, 

   a planting of the LORD

I knew I was going to forget about it. Using my marker, I highlighted the verses. Because there was not enough light, I pressed the marker harder as it seemed like it wasn't working. The next morning, I remembered and showed it to my friend, I was laughing a little bit, since the highlights turned out to be too bright. I bet you won't miss it. I knew that it means something but I kind of ignored it. Now that I think about it, maybe He wants me to show me something but it was too early to understand it.

Today I was reminded of this Chapter, Isaiah 61. It was a promise to Project Tenfold. It is a promise to us or maybe, it is my vision and prayer for us all. Historically, Isaiah was written years and years ago and it is a book about the restoration of Israel but I believe God's word applies to the past, the present and the future. 

You see, Project Tenfold isn't just a charity org. I hope that we all understand that we don't just give donations or money or time. We do more than that. God wants us to do more than that. He wants to use us to show others that He is God - bring hope to the hopeless and help the helpless in our own little ways; send the message that God's grace is never-ending and in the end He, and He alone, gets the glory and not us. He could have chosen anyone else – someone rich who can afford P1M to start a Foundation but He chose us. He could have chosen those with connections to famous people and media but He chose us. It is both magical and practical. Could it be that He has plans that we don't understand at the moment? I claim it. My faith, which I get from Him, claims it. I hope you do too. You don't have to fast to claim it. You can just pray this prayer with me:

FATHER,  

You are awesome. You own everything in this world - the air we breathe, the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the house we live in and the people to share it with. Thank you for your faithfulness every single day even if we don't deserve it. 

Thank you for choosing us to be part of Project Tenfold. You could have chosen others whom we think can be worthy of doing this but You chose us for reasons we may not clearly understand yet. We don't have all the money in the world. We have bills to pay. We don't earn that much. However, we are in faith that if You want something done, You will also provide. Bless us every day so that we may have enough. Bless us more every day that we may have something to share to our brothers and sisters. We know that You chose us because You want us to experience your overflowing blessings for 2012.  

Give us the strength and the grace to do what You want us to do. To bestow unto others a crown of beauty instead of ashes, to bind the brokenhearted, to free the captives, to release those hiding from the darkness of hopelessness, to rebuild what was ruined and restore places which were devastated.  Provide us with people who will shepherd our flocks and work our fields and vineyards.  

Make us your ministers of good will and grace. Feed us with the wealth of nations. Give us your DOUBLE portion so our one hand receives it and the other shares it. Allow us to rejoice in Your inheritance. Give us your everlasting joy as we give it to others. Reward us with Your grace and the people we love.  

Most of all, we pray that in the end of all these, people will acknowledge that we are the people whom You have blessed and all the glory and honor and praises belong to YOU alone.
