Now Playing: Fade Into You

Fade Into You
Mazzy Star

I wanna hold the hand inside you
I wanna take the breath that's true
I look to you and I see nothing
I look to you to see the truth

You live your life, you go in shadow
You'll come upon and you'll go black
Some kind of night into your darkness
Close your eyes with what's not there

Fade into you
Strange you never knew
Fade into you
I think it's strange you never knew

The strange light comes on slowly
A stranger's heart is out of home
You put your hands into your head
And your smiles cover your heart

Attraversiamo 2012: 8th Leg - Destination VA

I like flying. I meant being on an airplane. Long air travels are tiring but there are things you can get from it that you won't get from road or sea travels, or short flights.

When your destination is half the world away, you might have the chance to see the sun and the moon in one trip. If you are luckier, you get to experience it twice - to and from your destination. Flying gives you a chance to see the endless sky, massive bodies of water and vast lands while you listen to your playlist. Indeed, flying and music go along together.

Last September, I was given an opportunity to travel to Virginia for a business project. It meant a great deal to me because it was a task that I am very passionate about and it was my first time to travel to the US. I was STOKED!

The sight of the US, from above, reminded me of the board game I used to play with my brothers when we were younger - The Millionaires Game. There were vast lands, cars parked in almost the same direction, houses that look alike, pools and very visible roads. Where's the banker?

I flew to Richmond via Nagoya, JPN and Detroit MI. I fell for Virginia the moment I saw it from above because of its very green color. It was relaxing to the eye and gives you a warm and cool feeling at the same time. Friends have asked me if I got a list of places I plan to go to when I reach VA. As a matter of fact, I do. I wanted to go to Richmond SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). In addition, I wanted to visit The Pentagon and the FBI HQ - J. Edgar Hoover Building (which are in Washington DC, a few hours drive from VA).

I stayed in Hyatt House-Richmond West (formerly Hotel Sierra) beside Short Pump Mall and very near other upscale establishments and eating places.

Short Pump Mall became my go-to place for quick meals, running routines very early in the morning, fresh air, and, believe it or not, some quiet. In our malls in my side of the world, malls are a little bit crowded and noisy. For the first time, I was able to just sit down, read and enjoy the peace in a mall.

I can talk about a hundred things about this trip but am not sure if I can put them all here without taking too much space. I'll just concentrate on a few highlights.

Food

You may find my food adventures on a separate entry from here.

Richmond SPCA

Yes. I got a chance to drop Richmond SPCA a visit. A good friend, who also works for our client, made sure I get to tick this off my list before I leave. Such a privilege!

The facilities were amazing - fully air-conditioned, ample parking space, very good odor management, plenty of room to move around and play with shelter animals and a lot of available educational must-reads. How I wish our local shelters can get enough support they need to turn it this way. If I had enough time, I would have signed up for a day or two of volunteer work. I hope I get to come back.

New Friendships

I met a lot of new people during my visit and I have enjoyed even the short conversations I had with all of them. But what stood up the most is meeting Andrea. Andrea is a trainer from a competitor site but there is nothing in her that would suggest that there is competition between us. She is a sweet girl and I loved every moment that I was with her. We would talk about a lot of things - our lives, a little bit of our love stories, her son, Alex, work and most of all, how God has worked and continue to work in our lives. We'd go out and try new things together; almost got ourselves in trouble walking the busy West Broad Street. Am not sure how many pedestrian rules we broke. Ha! We hopped into each other's hotel too to try the swimming pools. We went shopping together, talked and talked and talked. I miss her. We still email each other. I really hope I get to visit Costa Rica soon and that she gets to visit my country too.

Southern Hospitality

This trip was for a business project but for the most part , it didn't feel like work. Blame it on the very warm hospitality of the people who have done everything they can to make me feel at home.

Catching Up

I am not sure if I will still get a chance to come back so I did find time to see old friends and former colleagues who played very important roles in shaping who I am now. Some I got to have photos with, some I didn't. It was nice to reconnect.

Mornings

You can say I am being highly sentimental, but the best thing I had in VA was each morning I got to enjoy. I am already used to working at night and even to aggressive changes in schedules. But I always look forward to come across those rare chances of waking up in the morning, enjoying the coffee on a cold breeze before getting ready to work. It makes me feel normal and the day, easy. Sometimes, I just get tired of spending my morning wasted and tired from work. I got to experience a day job again.

There were mornings when I would wake up way earlier than when I will be picked up from the hotel so I could get to run, spend an hour to enjoy my breakfast, watch the news or read the newspaper, and catch the sun; all these while listening to one song.

My best friend left one of his favorite songs on repeat on my Ipod. I listened to it first while waiting for my first plane out. I opted not to change it the whole trip. It was a warm song that is full of hope. I can use a lot of it while away from home.

When traveling, I do two things to remember it in the future, wear the same perfume or listen to one song. Now, even if I may never had a chance to travel back to Virginia again, as long as I listen to that song, I can always go back to that Virginia morning feeling, Sooner or Later. It would feel like I never left.

Attraversiamo 2012: 7th Leg - Destination Cuenca

Post-edited photo from Jem.

When we first came to Cuenca, we did nothing but take a U-turn. (See this link for the story.)

Who would have thought we'd come back?

Cuenca isn't part of the plan. The plan was to just to give me a send-off breakfast before I leave for a short business trip.  The plan was to go to Tagaytay, catch the sun and enjoy a warm breakfast in a cold weather.
But with friends equally adventurous as I am, "plans" are actually just Plan B. We are more expectant of what and where our ride will bring us.

In our search of where to eat breakfast, we stopped by this famous overlooking strip in  Tagaytay  and welcomed the sun.

After a few minutes, a friend invited us to drop by their place in Cuenca for some home cooked brunch. Who could refuse that tempting offer, so we went. And along the way, we stopped at Fantasy Land in Lemery Batangas for some photos.

When we got to Jelaine's house, we were stunned by this mouth watering Pinoy homemade lunch she and her family prepared for us! We were hungry unstoppable!

To thank Jelaine's mom and her family for filling in our empty tummies, we took this photo.

With Nellie who took this photo for us.
We were in a hurry to go back to Manila trying to get ahead of the traffic coding. We gassed up. Just when we thought we are way ahead of time, our car stopped in the middle of a busy road. Ten couldn't figure out what went wrong at the beginning, until a stranger helped us find out why. The gas boy pumped unleaded gas instead of diesel. It didn't take long before we discovered the mess it created.

It took us four long hours to fix it - under the heat of the sun, stress and heated arguments with the gas station owners and staff.

We finally gave up the hope of being able to get ahead of the coding rule and embraced our very interesting fate. We took a walk in the clouds as we went home, stopped by a shopping area for some great finds and had dinner on our way.

Post-edited photo from Jem.

We went to Cuenca the first time and came back thinking there is nothing happening in it. This second trip proved that a trip and/or a destination can come in different stories. I was swept away by the adventures this trip unfolded for all of us.

Looks like some encounters need a second chance to reveal what they concealed the first time.

“Learn how to live and you'll know how to die; learn how to die, and you'll know how to live.”

Food and Thoughts: The Conclusion

Read the first entry first (If you haven't). Here's the link.

What started as a mere search for new restaurants and food adventure to break a monotonous eating habit became more than it sounds. It became a search for new experiences and new encounters.

My blog isn't famous, neither am I; but my friends and family supported my passion to write about my experiences. In a number of entries, you will see almost the same faces but the experiences and lessons were different. It strengthened my ties with important people in my life and even those I rarely see.

The food trip became more than just the food. It became about what goes on while we eat the food, before we eat the food, after we eat the food or, sometimes, as we plan where to eat. It was about the support of friends, the time to be together, the ideas we exchanged, the disagreements and the catching up. Even if some stories were repeated many times.

Food is an essential part of our lives, especially in the Filipino culture. Food is part of our every event - celebrations, heartaches, catching up, discussions, first meetings, happy and sad stages. We show our hospitality by serving food. Food makes us happy. Eating together as a family at the dinner table is an important part of who we are. It plays a crucial role in how our parents bring us up.

Even Jesus used food to bring the disciples together to remember His sacrifice for our sins. Why?  Because food is important to everyone. Because no one can survive without food. Because it is a necessity no matter who you are and where you came from. It is something that you will remember all the time. Anything that's associated with it should not be forgotten.

Talking about the food and the restaurants that I have experienced barely scratches the surface of the purpose of this series. It addresses more than the physical need. I hope you found that purpose once or twice among the 50 entries I prepared for you.

Thank you for joining me in this series. Thank you for reading all the entries and the lessons that go with each. You may go back to all the entries from here.

Now Playing: Wishingbone

Wishingbone
Artist: Winter People

Do not look for me
In the summer heat
Do not look for me
In the autumn leaves

“It’s the moment in a travelling journey where you’re in a desolate, empty plain and you come across a wishingbone picked clean by the wind, buried in the sand. It’s the point in the journey where you question the worth of setting out in the first place.”

- Dylan Baskind, Vocals, Winter People in his description of the song Wishingbone.

Watch the acoustic version of the band from here.

Let me mention one Youtube comment that describes exactly how I find the song:

"you just expect it to keep on going, unfortunately it has to stop"

Playing with the Waves

It was a tiring half day at work. Jem, Sugar and I were seated staring at a blank wall realizing that we only consumed half of our one hour of lunch. When you work in a fast pace environment, it gets to you all the time. Jem decided to load Youtube on his phone and came across a video of one surfing adventure in the Philippines. We watched it together.

For two straight minutes that we were watching it, we were all silent - blown away by the playful waves, man's courage and the heartwarming music. Then... my eyes were wet. Yes, wet with tears. Sugar finally gave in and admitted she was moved too. Jem couldn't help but catch his breath in admiration. This isn't the first time we saw a video like this, the others we have seen may even be more dangerous and captivating than this but this hit us like no other.

What moved me is the amazing idea that God, the creator of heaven and earth and everything in it, could allow us to play with it. The sea can be a very dangerous place but with respect and great understanding, it can play with us and generously give us what it cannot give to all who ask for it.

I don't surf. I wish I could. I don't swim either but I don't have to be good at it or even to learn it to understand the magnificent beauty of the seas and nature. If you love to travel and you love saltwater as much as I (and my friends) do, you will understand why the video made me cry. I don't even have to explain.
The cure for anything is saltwater - sweat, tears, or the sea.

Here's the video for your viewing pleasure.

This is to honor all the surfers in the world, famous or not, rookie or masters; the seas and all bodies of water, and most of all, the Creator of all.
