Attraversiamo 2012: 2nd Leg Destination Pangasinan

Attraversiamo 2012: 2nd Leg Destination Pangasinan
January 28-30, 2012

Just arrived.
I wanted to surprise myself with what Pangasinan has to offer so I was so careful not to search the net too much about it. I wanted to try a famous restaurant in Pangasinan for my 2012 FOOD TRIPS (click this link) segment, so I searched for its address. As I was searching, I found out that Lingayen, Pangasinan is known to be the ‘Most Romantic Place in the Philippines’. I wondered why. It isn’t exactly a famous spot for honeymoon or weddings like Baguio or Tagaytay or Boracay. I was curious to find out why.

We did not have to worry about accommodation since we are staying at a friend’s house – Nel’s. Their house offers a countryside feel and comfort showered by the very warm accommodation of everyone in it and the sumptuous food prepared by his mom.

Day 1

The travel took more than 4 hours because we left Manila a little bit later than planned so we were caught in a heavy traffic in Tarlac. We ate lunch upon arrival, toured the place we are staying in and rested a bit to get ready for a short trip to the city where we got to see the very well-maintained Capitol Building of Pangasinan and, of course, to Lingayen Gulf.

Lingayen Gulf is an extension of the South China Sea. When I found out that it is, I got excited and reminisced on my experience of the Las Penitas and Poneloya Beaches in the Pacific Ocean coast of Nicaragua. The waves are raging, wild, and free.

When we got to the Lingayen Gulf shore, I was silenced by its beauty. I have always mentioned in my past blog entries how bodies of water can intimidate me. I immediately took my camera out and attempted to take a picture of the scene. Then, I felt like my photo cannot give justice to the scene so I switched to taking a video. There is an ample distance between the shore and the area where stores, cottages, etc are located. This gives visitors more than enough space to play, stroll and walk around with family and friends. It also keeps the shore free from trash. There's kite gliding, too, for recreation. I wanted to try but time wasn't really on our side.

We started swimming at around 6PM and didn’t stay long because the place turned pitch-black in no time. The moon was the only light we have. I wanted to stay as I was enjoying the exchange of stories while on water but we all didn't want Nel to worry about us. He didn't swim to look after us and our things. Sweet :)

We didn’t bother to shower after and decided to get on a tricycle and go back home all dripping wet. Haha! It was fun and …oh so COLD! Simple moments like this give so much happiness. There were 6 of us squeezed in a tricycle. My eyes were closed during the ride so I can feel the cold air on my face more. I was curled up to keep my body warm but I was smiling. There was so much gratefulness in my heart I can't contain it.

Upon reaching home, we got ready for dinner in haste. We were so excited to taste another set of meals prepared by Nel’s mom. We were not disappointed. Pinka was the favorite.

Day 2

I woke up to this red gumamela on my bed - a good morning surprise from Nel's niece. What a sweet morning!

After a satisfying breakfast, we immediately went to Dagupan for my FOOD TRIP #5. It was a little bit far from Lingayen but because I have earlier mentioned my wanting to try the famous Matutina’s Seafood Restaurant, everyone was supportive to join me. Matutina’s Restaurant is known to be the former President Arroyo’s favorite in Pangasinan. I won't write about it in this entry but you can join me in this food trip by reading this link

After the meal, we went to the nearby Tondaligan Resort in Bonuan, took pictures of the sunset, went around some more and headed home to catch the market for pasalubong.

Last Night

Nel, the host, couldn’t let this night pass without spending some time with his buddies. Time flies and he would have to leave them again and go back to Manila. I joined them and spent the whole night chatting, singing, laughing and eating. They have shared all their childhood stories, relationship mishaps and joys, and their adventures in Manila. Nel and his best friend Sherwin have spent almost their entire lives in Pangasinan. To make ends meet, both have tried their luck in Manila. Sherwin wasn't as lucky as Nel. (I used 'lucky' for a lack of a better term but I don't really believe in luck).Sherwin had to leave his job in Manila and stay in Pangasinan. Every time Nel goes home, they don't waste their time. They spend the nights having fun with the rest of their friends. They have gone through a lot which made their friendship strong. They would finish each other's sentences and watching them made me realize how simplicity can bring unfathomable joy and satisfaction, and route our eyes to the more important things in life – healthy childhood, friendship, loyalty and family. Although I wish that Nel finds a good life here in Manila, I know that whatever happens, he has a good life to go back to in Pangasinan with his family and friends anytime he wants. This thought gives me relief...And that's not luck!

Day 3

We went home Monday morning. It was a sad moment as we all didn’t want to go. Something happened in there. Something that made us want more, and maybe…go back. Now that I think about it, it really is the Most Romantic Place in the Philippines. It gives you beauty and warmth in the simplest, most romantic way possible.

With Nel's mom.

5: Eating in the Most Romantic Place in the Philippines

Eating in the Most Romantic Place in the Philippines
Matutinas Seafoods and Restaurant
Dagupan, Pangasinan PH
January 29, 2012
Project: Food & Thoughts No. 5

I will never let my Pangasinan trip end without adding to my 2012 Food Trips. From Lingayen, we went to Dagupan to search for the famous Matutinas Seafoods and Restaurant. I have seen this featured on TV in the past especially during the Arroyo presidency. It is said that this is her favorite restaurant in Pangasinan.

There were 5 of us hungry, tired and ready to eat so we ordered the following:

Buttered Sugpo

Deep fried Hito (catfish)

Sinigang na Milaga (2 servings)

Sinigang na Malaga (good for 2 or 3) - P220
Buttered Sugpo (good for 2)               -   230
Deep Fried Hito (good for 2 or 3)     -    200
4 Platters of Rice                                  -   200
1 Pitcher of Iced Tea                               -  150
                                                        ___________
Total -                                               P1000

We were full and satisfied. We only paid P1000. Not bad at all!

More than the food, this was our simple way of showing our gratitude to Nel who has warmly accommodated us in his hometown and in his heart. Read about this Pangasinan trip here.

Until next food trip!

4: Unplanned and Brave

Project: Food & Thoughts No. 4

Now, this is a real adventure – unplanned and brave.

I went to Megamall today to do an errand.  My goal is to finish the errand and go home. However, I was determined not to let the day pass without my 2012 Food Trip #4.

You see, I don’t really have problems eating alone in public places. I know a friend who even cries when she eats alone so she would rather suffer from hunger to wait for company. I believe everyone should experience it at least once in their lives. I have always believed that this fear (of eating alone) goes back to childhood, maybe from a feeling of abandonment. But, that’s a totally different story.

I scouted the restaurants nearest to where I need to go and found WHAM Burgers to be the most interesting at that moment.

WHAM Burger @P119
I ordered a Wham Burger for P119 and a glass of pineapple juice for P40. I waited for about 15 minutes. Good thing I brought this book that I started reading last night and couldn’t seem to let go of. It was a Christmas gift from my brother and his wife.

The wait is worth it. The burger was the juiciest I have tasted so far. It was also hot when served. I could see the smoke in every bite. The best part was every time I get to the roasted part of the patty. Yum yum!

It was fun. I got to eat on my own (which isn’t exactly a first but I still give credit to myself for being brave), read a book and enjoy some ‘me’ time.

Until the next food trip!

The Grace to win the Race

The Grace to win the Race

Dec. 17, 2011
Batangas, PH

After the 7-Day Prayer and Fasting, I hit rock bottom.
You read it right. I did. Ironic as it may sound, it is true.

Ptr. Robert was right; we will hit walls after walls after walls. I did not know it will start right after that week. I was empty and with no sense of direction. For days, I was detached from who I am. Worse, I stopped seeking Him. I was too afraid to make a mistake and too careful to even move. I was lost.

Today, I chose to move.

330AM. “I can do this”, I bravely told myself.

I geared up, went out and ran for an hour. I ran and ran until I could feel the warmth of the sweat on my nape against the very cold air. I ran like it was the last and stopped when I can no longer catch my breath. It was on my 4th round that I noticed I wasn’t alone. I was with this very old man slowly walking with what seemed to be improvised walking cane made out of wood, rubber and used clothing. He had probably been there even before I arrived. He was very slow and my four rounds could probably have been his one round. He smiled at me as if he had seen me pass by him many times. I was so preoccupied to notice. Plus I don’t really smile to strangers especially while running in the wee hours of the morning.

My pacing became slower after I noticed him. I became aware of the faces of the people I pass by. I heard the ‘taho’ vendor. I saw the dog crossing the street and stopped to ensure it manages to. I smiled at the sight of three old ladies on their slippers about to start their ‘morning jog’. I saw a familiar face, a former neighbor. I saw the old man again and this time I smiled back.

I was humbled. The Lord made me realized that I don’t have to always run to win the race. I can walk and then run again after gaining the strength I need. I can be a little bit slow and see things clearly. I can enjoy the ride. I can walk and still finish the race. I do not have to be in a hurry all the time.

As long as I don’t stop, I know that with God’s grace, the end to this race is guaranteed victory.

3: Second Chances

Second Chances
2012 Food Trip # 3:
Best Friends
Mandaluyong City, PH
January 22, 2012

Please read this link first (2012 Food Trips) if you haven't .

I see this restaurant every day but have not tried dining here until yesterday after church. Best Friends is known for serving affordable Filipino and Chinese food. I just remembered now that I am writing this that today is Chinese New Year and eating here yesterday was perfect timing.

I asked what their specialty is and tried it. I got myself the Paresio (Pares + siomai). I did not know what Pares is. According to Wikipedia, (I feel bad having to research what it really is, when it is a local cuisine) Pares is a dish originating in the Philippines and literally means 'pair'. It is a combination of beef stew and a bowl of soup served with rice and of course Siomai is pork dumpling served in dim sum.

Paresio priced at P80+.

To complete my food trip, I ordered black gulaman - a favorite Filipino beverage.

Gulaman @ P20+.

With Thel after church.
It was also in this food trip that Thel and I got to talk about how God can give everyone of us a second chance to fix our lives, forget the past and face the future with so much hope and faith coming from the One and Only Source.

By the way, this is our second meal for that day. Haha!

Until next food trip!

2: Sundays

Sundays
Chicken Bacolod
Market, Market Mall PH
January 15, 2012
Project: Food & Thoughts No. 2

Alright! I admit. I wasn’t so sure whether to include this or not because I initially got confused with Chicken Inasal, Chicken Bacolod, Bacolod Chicken Inasal, Chic-Boy and Mang Inasal. Am not even sure if all these names I mentioned exist.

Anyways… I love Sundays and I always look forward to it. Aside from going to Church and glorifying God for His faithfulness, I look forward to the after-church dinner with friends. We get to sit down, relax, enjoy the food and talk about a lot of things about life, work, relationships and our friendship.

Sugar, Thel and Dannie for an after-Church dinner.

My 2012 Food Trip No. 2 - @ Chicken Bacolod, Market Market Mall, PH.

Inasal is grilled chicken which is a famous dish in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, PH. Restaurants serving chicken Inasal in the Philippines continue to grow; thus, the reason for my initial confusion.

What did I order for this trip? I got their Spicy Chicken Wings meal and their crispy chicken skin. Sorry I forgot the amount I paid. I like spicy chicken wings and maybe that's why I forgot.

Until next food trip!

1: The Birth of The Tripod

The Birth of the Tripod
Koorah Koorah Restaurant, Tagaytay PH
January 14, 2012
Project: Food & Thoughts No. 1

I did not have any particular restaurant in mind. I did not prepare or research for this. All I wanted to do was to eat Bulalo in Tagaytay; that’s what people do when they visit Tagaytay, right? It isn’t my first time to eat Bulalo either.

This is my 2012 Food Trip # 1 - @ Koorah Koorah Restaurant with JB and Kim (the tripod).

Most restaurants in Tagaytay serve Bulalo as their special meal. Bulalo is beef bone marrow and shank boiled. Its warm soup complements Tagaytay's cool ambiance.

Bulalo priced @ P350.

They also serve Batangas' famous crispy Tawilis - a freshwater sardine which I later found out is included in my country's list of endangered aquatic species. This is probably the last time I will have one.

Tawilis meal priced @ P95.

More than the food, it was the company of awesome friends that made it special. Thanks to JB and Kim for dining with me. This isn't our last food trip. You both promised me that.

 JB and Kim.
Until the next food trip.

2012 Food Trips

2012 Food Trips

Image borrowed from http://www.clipartguide.com
I originally wanted 100 because it (well, sort of) has a grand sense of accomplishment in the way it sounds. However, I also thought of being closer to reality as much as I can.

I love to eat. This year, I thought of trying new food experiences. When you work at night, your choices of restaurants are only limited to the 24-hour food chains we see around. When you live on your own, cooking isn’t really practical so I want to broaden my hunger this year.

I want to try 100 50 restaurants/food chains/eatery that I haven’t experienced and write about it here. However, I have the following disclaimers:

1.     I am not a good cook and my taste buds do not work like my mom’s (I learned this from a tv show – my ‘not-being-able-to-cook-well’ is not a disability. It has something to do with my taste buds.)
2.     I am not a food critic. Do not expect that I will talk about how one taste explodes in my mouth and how it complements the other ingredients that are already in my mouth, whew! Not my thing, I’m sorry.
3.     Asking you to join me doesn’t mean I am paying for your food. Treat this as a regular lunch or dinner or breakfast where you have to pay for your own and I pay for mine.
4.     No. 3 does not mean I will not allow you to pay for my food. Of course, you are free to invite me and pay for mine.
 5. I don't have plans of pigging out and spending my hard-earned money just on food. You can discount the idea that I will be dropping by expensive places. I can even go street food if I my lazy taste buds dictate so.
6.     I will not eat dogs or other food that I am not familiar with. My food adventure does not equal to trying all. I just want to experience new restaurants and write about it. I decide for my tummy, you don’t.
7.     If you have a restaurant and you are willing to sponsor my meal (and a friend’s maybe) feel free to invite me thru my blog’s email myembry@gmail.com or better yet, write a comment to this blog entry with your resto's contact details and map. I hope I can go.
8.     My rule is to have fun and be grateful for the experience. Make it yours too when you join me.

God is good all the time. Life is, too, when we are with Him all the time.

Itadakimasu! Bon appetit! Selamat makan! Jemput makan! Buen provecho! Kainan na!

Seven of Hearts: Day Seven

Day Seven

My Heart’s Radical Faith

(photo soon)

I’m casting my cares aside
I’m leaving my heart and mind on You
I’m reaching my Hand to Yours
Believing there’s so much more
Knowing that all You have in store for me is good
I’m putting my fears aside
I’m leaving my doubts behind
I’m giving my hopes and dreams to You
Jesus
I won’t worry about tomorrow
I’m trusting in what You say
Today is the day
